2012 BMW 3 Series rendered again
The new F20 BMW 3 Series is scheduled to launch in 2012 and with years before its unveiling, automotive magazines have begun to build the enthusiasm around BMW’s top seller vehicle. With the new F30 3 Series Sedan, BMW will return to the “slimmer look”, with squat proportions and short rear overhang. The overall dimensions of the car remain similar and the exterior design is more toned and muscular, bringing some the aggressiveness and design lines seen in the recent models. BMW is getting back to basics with clean uncluttered shapes, plus lower and wider kidney grille openings. While not illustrated in the rendering below, our sources mention that the hood design will also most likely mimic the one found in the Z4 and the new 5 Series, with more aggressive, but still fluent design lines. The 3 Series has its wheels pushed all the way out to the corners, which gives the car a great stance and muscular good looks. The typical BMW glasshouse remains and in the new design, the 3D line above the Hofmeister Kink.
All Infinitis have edgy styling and claim to offer a sporty driving experience. The push into Europe brings five models, ranging from the BMW 3-Series-rivalling G37 saloon, coupĂ© and cabrio to the FX – a sporty SUV competitor to the X6.
In between sits the EX37. The crossover model shares its platform with the G37, so it’s considerably smaller than the 530d GT. A taller ride height helps it to make an impact, but does it look more dynamic as a result?
Although the jury is out on that, if you want a car which blurs defined class boundaries and makes a statement, the EX is well worth a look.
Just don’t be fooled into thinking it offers SUV levels of practicality. Rear legroom is tight and the 340-litre boot is exactly 100 litres smaller than the cavernous 530d GT load area. Up front, the driving position is equally confined – the seat doesn’t adjust low enough and the range of movement on the wheel is limited.
